Somaliland and the UK: Stability and Sustainable Development

On 11th November, Lord Sheikh delivered the keynote remarks at the UK-Somaliland virtual trade and investment conference on stability and Sustainable Development, organised by DMA and GUUL Group. The high-level event was attended by over 200 delegates from a range of sectors, and featured senior cabinet ministers from the Government of Somaliland and the FCDO. 

Drawing on his experience in Africa, and East Africa, Lord Sheikh discussed the strength of the relationship between the UK and Somaliland, the potential for Islamic Finance, sustainable investments and the development of Berbera Port as a catalyst for growth. 

Lord Sheikh noticed the strategic importance of Somaliland as a gateway into the Horn of Africa and opportunities within agriculture, renewable energy, tourism and manufacturing. He described Somaliland as one of Africa’s best kept secrets, noting the government’s eagerness to undertake more trade.
